discussion: Cable modem lost physical connection and just cycled through checking the wire for data. Served up a page at 192.168.10.14 that showed never going past step 3 of the handshake process, usually stopped at step 1 or 2. May have been related to midwest-wide outages to various AT&T services that occurred at the same time.

resolution: Let Mediacom sort it out, and in the morning saw connectivity return on the physical layer. Then pushed the Internet on/off button on the cable modem to reactivate the connection passthru. Oddly, the state of that button is saved through a powercycle. Did not have to change my DNS information as my IP did not change.
